Delayed growth
Sickle cells can’t carry as much oxygen as healthy red blood cells. So us sickle cell warriors have less oxygen in our bodies, which results in anaemia. There is less oxygen being carried to our tissues and this delays the growth and healing process in our bodies.
This is particularly evident in children with sickle cell as many experience delays with puberty. This was true for me as I started my period at the age of 16, when the average age to start is 12.
At the time I didn’t know it was sickle cell related but I did think starting so late was strange.
This delayed growth is also why sickle cell patients typically have a slim physiqueHave you experienced delayed growth?
