My parents both know that they were carriers, and they tested me for sickle cell while I was in the womb.

Did your parents know their genotype?

Yes, my parents knew.  I am the youngest of 10 children.

Oh wow, the youngest of 10! That’s amazing!!!

If you don’t mind me asking, do any of your siblings have sickle cell too?

My parents did not know until they had me and I started getting sick.

Hey Kassem, yeah a lot of people are in the same boat!

When did they eventually find out?

My parents were unaware of being carriers.  They found out only after I started getting sick.

A lot of couples are like your parents Viviane, not knowing until the child starts showing symptoms.

Do you know what age you were diagnosed?
