Carers! How much do you know about donating your stem cells and have you registered to be a stem cell donor?

About five years ago, I registered to be a stem cell donor without really knowing what I was doing. All I was told is that your stem cells could be used to help others be “cured” from conditions such as sickle cell and cancer, however, the chances of you actually being a match is very slim…and that was it!

A few weeks ago I got a call and was told that I was a match for someone in need of a bone marrow transplant and they wanted to do some tests to see if I would be a suitable donor. My initial response was one of panic. I don’t know much about the procedure, the only assumption I have is that it is very painful.

Have you been in a similar position? If so, how did you feel when you got the call?
