At the first signs of a cold –scratchy throat etc –immediately swallow five Vitamin C 500mg tablets.

Then take two tablets every day till things start improving.

Lot’s of hot drinks are a help too.

After having taken vitamin d for a year and a half at the time covid started I am convinced that vitamin D is beneficial.  I typically get a cold every 3 months and since starting taking the supplement I have not had a single cold.  I do not have an underlying condition, however my son does have sickle cell disease.  He’s taking plenty of other medications; taking vitamin D would be the giddy limit at this point in his life, as benefitial as it may be to do so.

Our son (has type SS) was vaccinated –two doses of pfizer vaccine here in the USA.

No problem with first dose, but second dose proved different.  He had pain and fevers and then was hospitalized for 11 days.  He was doing OK on IV fluids for 3 1/2 days but then started having problems breathing.  Acute Chest Syndrome set in severely.  He was on an BiPAP mask in the ICU and received 3 units of blood followed by apheresis treatment involving 4 units more.  There were at least 48 hours of very difficult breathing and then he started to ease out of it.  He was very close to being intubated and placed on a respirator.  BiPAP mask is difficult enough and thank God he wasn’t. We had thousands of friends praying for us.  VERY scary.

This doesn’t mean you should avoid being vaccinated.  However people with Sickle Cell need to watch out after receiving the vaccination for up to a week should things spiral out of control. Hopefully there will be guidelines developed.  Perhaps a pre-vaccination blood transfusion would be a good idea, as it is with anything else that stress your body out.  Example: international plane travel

The Acute Chest Syndrome developing so rapidly caught us off guard and we were very glad to have our son in the best place –the hospital.

    Thanks for asking,

    Ethan

  • OK, thanks. My wife and I are trying to help our teenage son battle Sickle Cell. Teenagers are teenagers and don’t always eat and drink healthy things!

  • Do you have a list of foods which you have found to be beneficial to reducing/preventing crisis? Thanks Ethan

Yes, Welcome back. My son was luckily able to be in reverse isolation for the last 3 months along with my daughter, my wife and myself. Seems to have been a big help to keep away from all the other bugs running around and of course SARS-CoV2!!!! The kids did a lot of arts and crafts and given our rural location got out into the woods and enjoyed bird watching, building fires, and more recently fishing!
My son has not been free of chronic pain especially at night, but we’re very happy to have been able to stay out of the hospital.

    Continue staying safe,
