Oh boy! I am very proud of myself. I haven’t done all I want to do yet but I have accomplished a lot. First I am 56 years old! Yay! That is huge. I am educated. I have an undergraduate degree in Special Education, a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology and a PhD in Counseling Psychology. I was blessed with two daughters who are adults now. I am a grandmother of one precious three year old granddaughter. I have traveled extensively. I’ve been throughout Mexico and the USA, three countries in Europe, most of the Caribbean islands and Hawaii, Puerto Rico, South and Central America. So I have gotten around. I also write and have published the American Pride Middle Grade book The Colors of Our Hope. I have many more books I am trying to publish. That’s one of my goals that keep me going. I also founded and direct a nonprofit organization that focuses on helping people rebuild their lives after a life circumstances such as domestic violence, incarcerations, addictions, severe illness. I have had to rebuild my life back many times. The support and encouragement I received helped me to overcome and keep pushing. That’s what we are trying to do in our outreach. We support our local sickle cell association and provide services that we can. I am blessed to have many volunteers who love to give back. I think you have to do what you can with what you have and constantly build upon your skills. Humans are always learning and adapting and moving through opposition. It is what makes us strong. A seed has to push through the dark soil to get to the sun and blossom!

But, I do enjoy company. My husband stays by my side when I am in the hospital even on that uncomfortable sleeper chair. We talk and it’s good to know he’s there. He prefers it too because he doesn’t have to be away worried. He’s retired now so it’s easier but he also did it when he was working. We consider ourselves partners. The hospital doesn’t have it now but when I was younger the cancer wars had a portable TV and DVD player. They would bring around movies and you could reserve it for overnight. I really enjoyed planning a movie night with popcorn. It was helpful for when my children were small. It gave us all the feeling of home even for a few hours. We would also plan pizza nights on Saturdays and Sunday picnics where family would camp out in my room after church and eat a chicken dinner from KFC or Bojangles. Even if I didn’t eat much it was great to have family around me and to be made apart of what is our regular routine when I am home. It gave me motivation and inspiration to get better more quickly. I am thankful for those days.

This month I am celebrating my father’s 93rd birthday! I am so happy for him. He doesn’t get around much but still goes to church and out to restaurants with my mom. This year his birthday is on Easter Sunday! It is an extra special birthday. His only sibling is 91. His mother lived to 92. I think he’s got pretty good genes! I feel blessed and fortunate to be active at 56. So I guess I got some of those good genes too!

I have considered a bone transplant to the point that I went to National Institute of Health in Maryland to try to get into their research program. I was tested and everything but found out that my only sibling is not a match. My two children are willing but are not the best candidates. I still entertain the idea when I hear about it but none of my doctors seem optimistic. I am 56 years old and they think it is too risky to consider.

- Wow. I never knew. I ate the white school glue as a little child but soon started chewing paper. All types of paper. Sometimes I would swallow it. It’s less now but sometimes I still find myself doing it. Is it nervousness?
