Some really great points have been made! I haven’t worn a mask in a while but now that it is getting to the colder seasons, I’m considering starting again.

Thanks @virus for the nice words and best wishes. My mum definitely had a great time,
Sometimes, it is great just enjoying the weather. Eat, sleep and work is still a great way to spend the summer in my opinion!

When I was younger I didn’t see much about sickle cell outside of my friends and family. However, as more awareness is being raised, I am starting to see more information about it. I understand how important it is for a person with sickle cell to have a solid support network. This is something I have seen from experience that really helps and I try to make myself as available to support how and when I can.
What about you @tito-oye how do you find your support network now? Have they helped you or is there any areas you’d like more support in?

@tito-oye. I definitely think that in the UK there has been a decline in the quality of the National Health Service especially in recent years. But I think this is heavily due to understaffing. lack of resources and a back log since COVID-19. Unfortunately that means treatment that people require may not be delivered with the best care.

@virus it’s great that you’re still able to get out and do some form of movement!

Yes it is a hard time for a lot of people here, hopefully, the government steps in to make it more affordable for people @virus

My favourite form of exercise is playing football, I can never get tired of it!

When facing a stressful situation I also spend some time doing things I like. For example, I would go to the gym, go for a run or play a game on my PS5. Doing such activities help me bring my stress levels down, after which I can go back to the cause of the stressful situation with a level head and address it more efficiently.

@virus it does seem extremely warm! With the cost of living so expensive now I am worried that it will be costly to maintain a warm house, so I have resorted to using hot water bottles more often and drinking hot fluids as much as I can.

I know a lot of people with sickle cell that can relate, especially the stigma of being the sickly one or being called a sickler.
@healed56, How often does the opportunity present itself for you to speak about this openly?
-
Thanks for sharing @virus. How often do you see your helpers?

MemberAugust 30, 2022 at 12:12 pm in reply to: Managing Extreme Heat with Sickle CellOh wow, -12 Celsius is extremely cold. Germany is definitely not the warmest place to be, especially in winter. But -12 is definitely colder than usual. Regardless, I am happy to hear that you manage to stay warm. @virus, Have you been back to Germany or Europe since your training course?

That’s a very good stance to take Kassem, thank you for sharing. I think awareness and knowledge of sickle cell is very important to change any narratives. Sickle cell has a lot more exposure now than it did 5/10 years ago. But I do understand not everyone feels this way and some people may still not be comfortable sharing with others.

MemberOctober 27, 2022 at 8:08 am in reply to: What’s Clinical Trial Participation Like?Yes, there’s always the risk that the medicine/treatment you’re trialling maybe ineffective and may even do more harm than good. The scientists and researchers will do all they can to minimise this risk, but they can’t control everything.
The best thing to do when thinking about taking part in a clinical trial is your own research. Find out as much as you can and then make an informed decision.
